Otoplasty

Otoplasty is a type of cosmetic ear surgery that, during surgery, the plastic surgeon corrects the shape, size and position of the ears.

There are several types of otoplasty:

Increase the size of the ear;

Some people may have small ears that are not fully developed. In this case, they may want to have cosmetic ear surgery to increase the size of their outer ear.

Hairpin

This type of otoplasty involves the close of the ear to the head. This is done in people whose ears are prominent from the side of the head.

Decreased ears;

Macrotia is when your ears are larger than normal. People with macrotia may opt for cosmetic ear surgery to reduce the size of their ears.

Good candidate for ear surgery

Otoplasty is usually used for ears that include:

Ear protrusion from the head
Larger or smaller than normal
Because of an injury or structural problem, they have an abnormal shape from birth.

Risks of Ear Surgery

Otoplasty has some associated risks. These include:

Reaction to anesthesia
Bleeding
Infection
Asymmetric ears
Oscar at the incision site

Cosmetic Ear Surgery Process

Otoplasty is usually an outpatient procedure. It may take between 1 and 3 hours.

People may receive sedative medication during local anesthesia surgery. In some cases, general anesthesia may be used.

The specific surgical procedure used depends on the type of otoplasty you have.

Generally cosmetic ear surgery includes:

1. Making an incision behind the ear or inside ear folds

2. Manipulation of the ear tissue, which can include removing cartilage or skin, folding and shaping cartilage with permanent stitches, or grafting cartilage into the ear.

3. Closing the incision with sutures

Recovery from Cosmetic Ear Surgery

You have bandages on your ears and you may also need to remove the stitches. Your dressing will remain in place for about a week. Once removed, you should wear an elastic headband for another 4 to 6 weeks.
